Capacity planning starts with habits
The right storage size depends less on the computer and more on your habits. A light office laptop can stay comfortable with modest capacity for years. A development workstation, gaming desktop or video-editing laptop can outgrow the same drive quickly.
Think in terms of active working space, archived files, backups and growth. A drive that technically fits your files today may still be too small if routine updates, caches and project files leave little free space.
Office and study use
Documents, spreadsheets, PDFs and browser-based tools do not usually need huge local storage. The hidden growth comes from downloads, email attachments, offline sync folders and duplicate exports. Students may start with simple notes but later add recorded classes, datasets, design projects or programming tools.
If most work lives in a managed cloud account, local capacity can be smaller. If you need offline access to many files, add more room.
Software development
Development can consume storage in uneven ways. Source code may be small, but dependencies, package caches, containers, virtual machines, local databases and build artifacts can grow. If you use several toolchains, leave room for experiments and cleanup delays.
