Start with the physical format
M.2 and 2.5-inch SSDs look very different. A 2.5-inch SSD is a small rectangular drive shaped like a laptop hard drive. An M.2 SSD is a slim circuit board that plugs into a motherboard slot and is usually held down with a small screw.
The confusing part is that physical shape is only one part of compatibility. M.2 describes a form factor. It does not automatically mean NVMe. Some M.2 SSDs use SATA. Some use NVMe over PCIe. A computer must support the specific type you choose.

Look for the exact motherboard or laptop specification. Marketing labels can be vague, and visual inspection alone is not enough.
Length and slot checks
M.2 drives come in different lengths, often described by numbers such as 2242, 2260 or 2280. The first two digits describe width, and the last two describe length in millimeters. A system that supports 2280 may not support every shorter or longer module without the right mounting point.
Also check whether the slot is already occupied, whether a heatsink blocks clearance, and whether the device supports booting from that slot.
Replacement considerations
Before replacing a drive, back up important data. Decide whether you will clone the existing drive or do a clean operating-system installation. Cloning can preserve applications and settings, but it requires care when moving between drive sizes or partition layouts. A clean install is simpler in some cases but requires reinstalling software.
For laptops, avoid unsafe disassembly. If the device uses glued panels, unusual screws, soldered storage or warranty seals, professional help may be appropriate.

Product titles often compress many details into a short phrase. A title may say M.2, SATA, NVMe, PCIe or 2280, but you still need to match those details to the computer. A short compatibility line may omit whether a second slot is disabled in some configurations or whether a slot shares lanes with another component.
If the machine is important for work or study, verify from the service manual, motherboard page or system documentation. Guessing from the shape of the old drive is risky when M.2 is involved because two drives can look similar while using different protocols.
